Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is a great place to learn, whatever your age. Inspired by the beautiful grounds and fascinating collections, we provide a range of training courses and creative events throughout the year.

An introduction to working with Gressenhall Farms’ Suffolk Horses

Have you ever wanted to work with the horses and staff at Gressenhall Farm?

This is an out of the ordinary opportunity for anyone with an interest in the work we do at Gressenhall.

The day will be very practical. You will be working with the horses, alongside Richard Dalton, Gressenhall Farm Manager. Numbers will be limited to 4 per day.

The day will consist of:

    • An introduction to our team of Suffolk Punches and how we use them

    • Basic handling and grooming

    • Harnessing

    • Working with horses and staff on the farm

    • Cup of tea and a summary of the day

This will be a physically active day and will be outside regardless of the weather (within reason!). You will need to wear appropriate foot wear and clothing.

Refreshments and lunch provided. Please note any specific dietary requirements when making your booking.

Adults £150, Norfolk Museums Pass and Friend of Gressenhall £135. Discounted price of £100 each for groups of up to 4 people when booked at the same time.

Ploughing Experience Day with Gressenhall's Suffolk Punch Horses

This one day course, with Richard Dalton, Farm Manager at Gressenhall Farm, will cover the basics of ploughing, including how to harness a pair of our Suffolk punch horses and prepare the plough for work in the field.

By the end of the day, participants will understand the basic settings for starting to plough a field with two heavy horses and will have had hands on experience of ploughing.

This course is suitable for people who already work with horses, or have attended the “Introduction to working with Gressenhall Farms’ Suffolk Horses” course. This will be a physical day and will be outside regardless of the weather. Appropriate footwear and clothing will be necessary.

Adults £150, Norfolk Museums Pass and Friend of Gressenhall £135. Discounted price of £100 each for groups of up to 4 people when booked at the same time.


Creative Writing Workshop

Tuesday 12 September 2017, 10am - 4pm
£40 per person/£36 for Museums Pass Holders

Develop your creative writing in this one day workshop which will focus on the description in the narrative through inspiration from the workhouse.

The workshop will consist of writing exercises which will explore how to create a sense of atmosphere, place and character through description.

This friendly and informal day run by writer Isabelle King will be very interactive and activity-based to help inspire creativity!

Needlefelt Workhouse Mice Masterclass

Friday 22 September 2017, 10am - 4pm
£40 per person/£35 for Museums Pass Holders

Discover how to make a felt mouse just like the ones hidden around Gressenhall Workhouse on this one day course.

Suitable for beginners, local artist Lara Cobden will show you the basics of needle felting, and will teach you how to shape the various components, forming your very own unique version of a Gressenhall Workhouse Mouse to take home!
All materials will be provided.



Willow Bird Sculpture Workshop

Wednesday 4 October 2017, 10am - 4:30pm
£45 per person/£40.50 for Museums Pass Holders

Spend the day weaving with basketmaker Sue Kirk and create your own bird sculpture for your home or garden using willow. You can choose from a pheasant, goose, duck or chicken.

Learn how to build a frame or armature using hoops made from willow , which then connect together. Learn the interlace weave which builds a layer of strong willow over your frame. Then apply willow to your sculpture which adds detail such as wings, tail feathers and beaks giving your bird personality!

A fun day, suitable for beginners.

Collograph Printmaking Workshop with Amelia Bowman

Monday 9th October, 9am - 4:30pm
£55 per person/£50 for Museums Pass Holders

In this one day workshop you will learn how to make a collograph plate and print from with it with Norfolk printmaker Amelia Bowman.

This collograph printmaking technique teaches you how to create line and texture by collaging mixed media.

You will also learn about Amelia's trademark "chine-colle" process and create a series of prints to take home.

All materials will be provided, participants will need to bring an apron.
