Norwich Castle Study Centre

Entry to Norwich Castle Study Centre is by appointment only.

Norwich Castle Study Centre is home for a wealth of the county’s collections of costume and textiles, fine, decorative and contemporary art, archaeology, natural history and the Royal Norfolk Regiment.

Researchers from around the world use this study centre to investigate the internationally important collections that are housed here.

The Norwich Castle Study Centre is also the headquarters of Norfolk Museums Service.

Admission

Researchers can view the collections for free. However, demand is high and so you must make an appointment in advance to see collections. Visits are dependent on the relevant staff being available and whilst every effort is made to accommodate visitors at the time arranged, very occasionally we have to postpone visits if staff are ill.

To arrange an appointment, email museums@norfolk.gov.uk.

You can search the Norfolk Museums Collections online.

Identifications

Norfolk Museums Service deals with thousands of identification enquiries every year. Currently we take enquiries for archaeology, Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum and costume and textiles. Please note that we cannot handle natural history/geology identification enquiries until the recruitment of a new Natural History curator.

Please email museums@norfolk.gov.uk with clear photos of what you would like identified. Please include details of where the item was found, the size of it, and any information known about it.

We will reply to acknowledge receipt of the email, and will forward it to the relevant curator. The timeframe for an identification will vary based on factors including the number of objects, the complexity of the enquiry, and workload of the individual curator. It may be that the curator or finds team wish to see your item, in which case they will contact you directly to arrange an appointment.

Please note that we are only able to accept enquiries relevant to our collections or from the Norfolk or East Anglian region.
