Angles on Empire
The writing show-cased here was created as part of Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service’s (NMAS) Stories of the World: Eastern Exchanges programme. Young people are at the heart of this official Cultural Olympiad programme, working in partnership with museum staff to find objects in the collections that resonate with their interests and to reinterpret them in various ways.
In May 2010 Chen Hong, a renowned calligrapher and painter of fish from Beijing, completed a month as artist-in residence in the museum service. As a result of the residency a closer relationship has developed between Chinese young people studying at the University of East Anglia and NMAS. In November 2010 Chinese students were invited to explore a range of objects from the museums’ reserve collections and in combination with their own experiences respond and reinterpret them both orally and in writing. They were supported by museum staff and a creative writing tutor for four weeks.
Some of the students’ writing that explores the meaning of the objects in new ways is reproduced here.
