Waterlog provides a key opportunity to see new work by seven leading British artists – Marcus Coates, Tacita Dean, Alec Finlay and Guy Moreton, Alexander and Susan Maris and Simon Pope. Each artist has produced new work directly or indirectly inspired by the literary journeys of W.G. Sebald, a writer who lived and worked in East Anglia until his untimely death in 2001.

Sebald’s book The Rings of Saturn, in which he describes a walk along the East Anglian coast, sets the tone for the exhibition. The book creates a strong sense of place and explores the farthest reaches of geography, history and memory.

These themes informed and inspired the imaginative forays of the Waterlog artists who have produced work in a wide range of media – film, video, photography, sculpture and installation. A highlight of the exhibition will be the new work by Tacita Dean, filmed in East Anglia and seen here for the very first time. Dean’s film is a portrait of the poet and translator Michael Hamburger, who Sebald visited at his Suffolk home whilst writing his book.

Work by Alec Finlay and Guy Moreton can also be seen locally at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

Waterlog has been conceived and developed by Film & Video Umbrella in partnership with Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and The Collection, Lincoln. It has been supported by Arts Council England and East Anglia Art Fund.

The exhibition has its own dedicated website, where you can find more information about the artists' work and contribute to the exhibition's blog. See www.waterlog.fvu.co.uk

The exhibition will tour to The Collection in Lincoln in September 2007.
