Welcome to the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Services
online Polar exhibition. Both the exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, and the online exhibition are designed to give a taste of Norfolk’s contribution to Polar exploration and scientific research. The objects in these exhibitions are all from Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service’s collections from across the county (including Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse Museum of Norfolk Life, Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life, and Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery). These webpages contain extra information that was not possible to fit into the museum exhibition (including biographical material). Although assembled by members of the department of Natural History, the exhibition contains elements of fine art, geology, botany, ethnography, oology, photography, and zoology. Every object has a fascinating story behind it: From skis that were used by Boatswain Feather on Captain Scott's first Antarctic expedition; to a huge Walrus skull bartered from Eskimo people by Captain Parry and his crew in 1822. Navigation through this site is done by clicking on the menus to the left of your screen; you can start searching for information on Antarctic or Arctic objects or browse through the biographies of the people behind the objects.Exhibition details: Museum Exhibition Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery Mammal Gallery Castle Meadow, Norwich Norfolk, NR1 3JU Open Monday to Friday: 10am to 4.30pm Saturday: 10am to 5pm Sunday: 1 to 5pm (School half-terms, Easter & Summer holidays Monday to Saturday: 10am - 5.30pm Sunday: 1 - 5pm) General enquiries: 01603 493625 Runs until March 2008 Online Exhibition Home Permanent online exhibition |
