Gressenhall Community: Tree Nursery Volunteer

Come and help us to grow trees! We are setting up a new Community Tree Nursery at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse. We are looking for volunteers to help us with all stages of growing trees from collecting seeds to the preparing the grown trees.

Not only will we be growing trees the nursery aims to inspire others to get growing with activities for school and community groups and information for visitors. The new tree nursery will be the first part of a new environmental hub for Norfolk which is being developed at Gressenhall.

About the role

We will be holding regular volunteering sessions every Thursday at the tree nursery from 10am to midday. We will also be running workshops and events outside of these times and there may be scope to volunteer at other times as well.

The nursery is at the farm site at Gressenhall museum. Most activities will be at the nursery. Some activities such as seed collection and planting will take place at other sites.

Tasks will depend on the season but may include:

  • Seed collection and processing
  • Watering and weeding
  • Sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings
  • Grading trees and preparing orders
  • Building raised beds
  • Chatting to visitors about growing trees
  • Helping with sessions with school or community groups
  • Assisting with training sessions

Experience and skills

No experience is needed for this role. You will need to be happy to be outside. You will also need to be happy to work with other volunteers and be polite to museum visitors. Horticultural skills would be beneficial but are not essential.

We will be running sessions with school groups, workshops and small events – for these you will need to be happy chatting to a range of people however as a tree nursery volunteer you can just be involved in the growing side if you’d rather!

Further information

The nursery is located at the farm at Gressenhall. Volunteers will need to walk down to the farm (approximately 500m from the car park/man entrance). If you have particular accessibility needs please contact us as we may be able to make arrangements.

You must be 18 or over or accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Tools, equipment and PPE will be provided. Training will be during tasks though we are hoping to run a series of workshops delivered by experts.
