KS2 A Day with the Anglo Saxons and Vikings

The event
A metal-detectorist has discovered a brooch in Norfolk that reveals the story of Thurweald, an Anglo-Saxon/Viking warrior-king, and his people. Meet several characters as you learn about the story of Thurweald, who has died. It is a time to mourn but also to wonder at his life, the things he did, and the lives he enabled his people to lead. Reflect on which possessions should be put in Thurweald's grave as we send him on his way to the afterlife.
Examine gallery exhibits with the metal-detectorist to learn about the burial practices and beliefs of the Anglo-Saxons. Meet Anglo-Saxon/Viking villagers and handle real and replica objects to gather information about costume, domestic life, religion, craftsmanship, work and trade. Plus hear tales from a storyteller, who will help you re-enact one of the heroic adventures of Thurweald, and create your own piece of Anglo-Saxon/Viking-themed jewellery to take home.

- Understand how primary sources are used to gather evidence about people's lives in the past
- Engage children with museum objects as sources of inspiration, knowledge and exploration
- Expand children's understanding of the origins of Anglo-Saxon and Viking beliefs and customs
