KS2 Ancient Civilisations: Farming to Philosophy

Essential information

Maximum group size 60, £5 per pupil, 10am until 2pm, £200 minimum fee

The event

Much of what we take for granted today would be very different or might not even exist if it weren't for the achievements and advances of ancient civilisations such as Greece, Sumer, the Indus Valley and others. The event explores four key achievements of various ancient civilisations, making this a great introduction to teaching ancient history.

The day consists of four activities led by museum staff:

  • Farming: Discover how farming changed the course of human history. Investigate ancient tools and become farmers from the Fertile Crescent.
  • Writing: Investigate the origins of writing and learn how to write in ancient Sumerian cuneiform.
  • Building: Explore the development of architecture and try your hand at designing and building a city.
  • Philosophy: Debate and vote on a solution to one of civilisation's oldest puzzles.

Aims and learning outcomes

  • To address the National Curriculum for KS2 History: 'Pupils should be taught about the achievements of the earliest civilizations - an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared...: Ancient Sumer; The Indus Valley; Ancient Egypt... Ancient Greece'.
  • To understand how modern life in Britain has been influenced by developments in the wider ancient world and the nature of ancient civilisations.
  • To give children opportunities to engage with a range of topics related to the development of ancient civilisations.
