KS2 Ancient Egypt: Discovery and Debate

The event

Egypt in the 1860s: one of a team of archaeologists has uncovered the tomb of the High Priest, Ankh Hor, and is excited to share the find with the world. But not everyone thinks that uncovering the tombs of the dead is a good idea!

Join our different characters to look at all sides of the debate:

With a 19th-century archaeologist, explore Egyptian artefacts from the Castle's collections.
With a modern-day conservator, learn about mummification and hear the story of Ankh Hor, a mummified person at the Castle.
With a 19th-century campaigner, find out about Ancient Egyptian daily life.
With a modern-day jewellery-maker, explore the significance of Egyptian jewellery and make an Egyptian collar to take home.

History learning outcomes

Inspire pupils' curiosity about the past and equip them to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement.
Raise awareness of how we find out about the past.
Engage children with museum objects as sources of inspiration, knowledge and exploration.
Expand children's understanding of Ancient Egyptian belief systems and culture
