The event

Norwich Castle has been a prison for most of its existence. Take a tour of the museum's former Georgian prison buildings and discover how the Castle changed as a prison from the 14th century to 1883. Look into different approaches to punishment in medieval and early modern Britain by handling and finding out about various implements of punishment.

Suitable for all GCSE exam boards.

Please note: this is an adapted version of the event while the Castle Keep, dungeons, Shirehall courtroom and prisoners' tunnel are closed to visitors.

Aims and learning outcomes:

  • Examine real implements of punishment to see and get a feel for how punishments through time have changed.
  • Describe and explain 19th century prison reform.
  • Describe continuities and changes to trials and punishments from c.500AD to the present day.
