Exhibition - Norwich Castle

This exhibition explores an extraordinary art world event from 2016 – the discovery of a piece of a missing painting by the famous Belgian surrealist artist, René Magritte beneath another of his works, ‘La Condition humaine’, which is in the collection here at Norwich Castle.

The discovery of a quarter of the once lost painting ‘La Pose enchantée’, known only by an old black and white photograph, follows the discovery of two other quarters found beneath works at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Reproductions of the works from MoMA and Moderna Museet, x-rays of ‘La Condition humaine’ showing the hidden quarter of painting, as well as the painting itself are on display here allowing you to explore a fascinating story that still has an ending just waiting to be discovered.
