Crime and Punishment (KS2)

Half day, £4.00 per pupil, adults free of charge (number of adults limited)

Pupils are needed to inspect the atmospheric old town jail.  Meet prisoner Charles Girdlestone to discover what prison life was like.  Find out about prison reformer Sarah Martin.  Pupils will decide if the punishment actually fits the crime.

The Tolhouse is perfect inspiration for character and story setting writing on the return to school.

Tollhouse Trials - Witchcraft (KS3 and 4)

Half day, £4.00 per pupil, adults free of charge (number of adults limited)

The Year is 1645 and Great Yarmouth is an unsettled town. Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder General, has sent John Stern to seek out and purge locals who are deemed to be practising dark magic.

Meet costumed characters, assess the evidence & hear the fate of those accused in these troubled times. This is the perfect compliment for studies of the Witch Craze of the 16th and 17th centuries and also English Literature, providing historical context understanding to studies of, for example, The Crucible.

"I have a much better understanding of the ordeals that the accused went through after this visit and when we revisit reading this play [The Crucible], I will be able to visualise it more clearly. Fantastic trip!" - Year 8 pupil, Ormiston Venture Academy.

"Students gained a greater understanding of the context of witch trials, the concept of being guilty until proven innocent and that the society was very much 'accuse or face being accused'. They were all very engaged and came back to school excited about the trip." - Teacher, Ormiston Venture Academy.
