Talk: Bertas Flachs (Berta's Flax) with Christiane Seufferlein
Christiane Seufferlein is an Austrian craft practitioner, researcher, and lecturer specializing in flax cultivation, linen production, plant dyeing, and textile heritage. She is the founder of Bertas Flachs, an international craft network dedicated to reviving flax traditions. Flax was once part of everyday life in Austria. In the Mühlviertel in particular, generations of women sowed, pulled, retted, broke, hackled, spun, and wove the fibres that clothed their families. Their knowledge was practical, precise, and deeply embedded in daily routines — yet their stories were rarely written down. In this talk, Christiane Seufferlein, founder of Bertas Flachs, shares the traditions of flax cultivation and linen production in Austria and brings to life the women who shaped this heritage. Additional afternoon workshops are bookable separately via the Flax & Fleece Project directly - please email for more details: [email protected]
